About Marlow.

Marlow-on-Thames is a riverside town steeped in history and, today, a busy tourist attraction and commercial centre. It is just four miles from our bed and breakfast accommodation to High Wycombe, and four to Maidenhead.

Some history:

  • The name is Anglo Saxon meaning ‘land remaining after the draining of a pool’.
  • In the Domesday Book in 1086 it was valued at the princely sum of £25.
  • There has been a bridge over the Thames at Marlow since the reign of King Edward III.
  • The current bridge is a suspension bridge, designed by William Tierney Clark in 1832.
  • There have been many notable residents, after whom Glade End Guest House are proud to name its bedrooms. They include Mary Shelley (who wrote Frankenstein there), Percy Bysshe Shelley, T. S. Eliot, Jerome K. Jerome and General George Higginson
  • More recently the town has been the home of Quintuple Olympic Gold Medallist Rower, Sir Steve Redgrave.

Today, Marlow bustles with life and entertainment:

  • Revellers come from all around to enjoy the town's vibrant pub scene.
  • There is a myriad of restaurants in Marlow to suit most tastes and wallets.
  • Just 6 miles down the road is Bray arguably the gourmet centre of the world, but you'll need a fatter wallet.
  • Our guest house is a convenient starting point for several circular scenic walks. It is an easy flat walk along the Thames from Marlow to Henley or Maidenhead.
  • There are many National Trust properties within easy reach of our bed and breakfast. The nearest is Cliveden just 6 miles away.
  • If you're a bird watcher you can go on a day's guided walk taking in a reservoir at Marlow to see 3 species of woodpeckers, kingfishers, ducks, waders, gulls...

Of course, no visit to Marlow is complete without a walk along the Thames.
